Helen Frederick is an award-winning artist, educator, curator and champion of the arts in the Washington, DC metropolitan community. Helen was recently named to our artist advisory committee, and has now joined us as newest member of our Board of Directors! She brings to our Board fresh ideas on the continuous engagement of new artists taking on the subject of human trafficking in meaningful and inspiring ways.
Helen played an integral role in the success of ArtWorks for Freedom’s fall 2017 campaign entitled ACTION DC!, which brought together 60 artists and 44 community partners to host 30 art events throughout the Washington, DC community addressing human trafficking. Helen curated several events during that campaign, including “RECLAIMING FREEDOM: A Call & Response” at Watergate Gallery and Busboys and Poets. She was also the facilitator of multiple ACTION DC! events, including film screenings, the Red Sand Project at George Mason University, a panel discussion and Zine and Book-making workshops at the Torpedo Factory. We are grateful for Helen’s ability to bring the most thoughtful and artistically innovative voices together to take on issues of social importance.
In her own words:
On the power of art… Art creates a solidarity of community, particularly when there’s opportunity for interactive experiences. In working together – collaborating – new forms of expression emanate from broadened experience. Whatever difficult human event is challenging us as part of the human condition, the provocation of that event can unite artists and non-artists together. That kind of solidarity creates new levels of awareness and brings forth new expressions.
